Slavery in Early America essays
Slavery in Early America essays Slavery in America stems well back to when the New World was first discovered and was led by the country to start the African Slave Trade-Portugal. The African Slave Trade was first exploited for plantations in what is now called the Caribbean, and eventually reached the southern coasts of America. The African natives were of all ages and sexes. Women usually worked in the homes, cooking and cleaning, whereas men were sent out into the plantations to farm. Young girls would usually help in the house also and young boys would help on the farm by bailing hay and loading wagons with crops. Since trying to capture the native Indians, the Europeans set out to capture African slaves. The Europeans in what was called The Triangular Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade shipped the African natives from Africa. This was an organized route where Europeans would travel to Africa bringing manufactured goods, capture Africans and take them to the Caribbean, and then take the crops and goods and bring them back to Europe. The African people, in order to communicate invented a language that was a mixture of all the African languages combined. This language now varies from island to island. They also kept their culture, which accounts for calypso music and the instruments used in these songs. In the 1600's when John Rolfe founded tobacco, tobacco became the main source of income for most of the colonists. The economic prosperity of the colonies was primarily dependent on the amount of tobacco produced. The growing of tobacco needed a large amount of land, with a large stable workforce. The increased demand for a large, stable workforce combined with the availability of African slaves, led to the use of slavery in the colonies. The slaves would only require being educated a little, instead of educating the indentured servants over after so many years have passed by. The African slaves also had other characteristics that enticed colonists to use them as a...

Resume Writing Format
Resume Writing Format Basically there are three different formats for writing resumes. There is the chronological resume writing format, which focuses mainly on prior experiences in the work force. Using this format is good when you want to focus on your prior work experiences. This is effective when you are looking to change jobs within the same field or when applying to corporations that rely mainly on your past experiences. This particular resume writing format shows exactly where you worked and for how long of a time. It also tells a prospective employer what you did in each job. If you are looking to change to an entirely different career field then this type of resume wouldnââ¬â¢t work very well as all it does is show what youââ¬â¢ve done at the places that you have worked. It doesnââ¬â¢t show your talents or any extracurricular activity that you may be looking to switch over into. Another resume writing format is called the functional resume. This type of resume makes it much easier for the reader to see all your qualifications in one spot. With the chronological, you have everything listed under each job and the reader has to read though each one to get an idea of your qualifications. With the functional resume writing format, you can showcase them all in one section. Remember, when a prospective employer reads resumes, he most likely has hundreds to wade through. Heââ¬â¢ll probably devote a good ten seconds on each one and if nothing catches his eye, itââ¬â¢ll go into the reject pile. This is where the functional resume can really jump out and grab someoneââ¬â¢s attention. This type of resume writing format is recommended for someone looking to make a career change into a totally different field. When youââ¬â¢re looking to do this, obviously your prior job experiences isnââ¬â¢t going to count much but if you have skills or qualifications in th e career you are hoping to move into, youââ¬â¢ll have the ability to list them in the functional resume writing format. A drawback of this type of resume is that it can make it difficult for some interviewers to determine exactly what you have done and where. The third type of resume is one which combines both the chronological and the functional formats. This type of resume can be the most effective one as it showcases your talents and qualifications as well as shows any prospective employers what your job duties were at each place. Using the combined resume format takes the obvious advantages that one can get from both resume formats but by doing so, this type of resume writing format can get a little longer than most. Keep in mind that you only have approximately ten seconds to grab someoneââ¬â¢s attention so focus on making your desired statement at the very beginning of the resume. Do this in a way that will pull the reader in and spark their interest enough to keep reading. Keep in mind the kind of career you are looking for and tailor your resume accordingly. A more traditional kind of field may require nothing but a chronological resume format while other, more creative, fields may prefer the functional type. Get some reference books and look for the different resume formats and play around with the information you have until you get an eye-catching resume. One that will pull the prospective interviewer in and make him want to pick up the phone and call you to find out more.

M4M4 Monoculture Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
M4M4 Monoculture - Assignment Example Today, many of small nations and communities living along the coast lines are highly threatened as beaches once locked in Arctic permafrost continue to be released by melting ice, shoreline erosion, rise in sea levels and increased storm activity. According to Pilkey, Pilkey and Fraser (2011), Miami has been listed as one of the most threatened cities based on the value of property that could be destroyed by floods caused by a three-foot sea level rise. It is estimated that sea levels in some cities located along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts could rise up to 55 inches. In a particular, the sea levels could rise by 20 inches in Miami Beach while in Boston city the levels could hit the 38 inches mark. The following table represents some of the urban centers likely to be affected by rising sea levels across the globe. The population likely to be affected by rising sea levels in Miami is estimated to be above 5.2 million and is expected to increase due to the growing number of tourism activities in the city (Pilkey, Pilkey & Fraser, 2011). This city is fourth largest and also United Statesââ¬â¢ lowest city. For this reason, sea levels are expected to increase by 20 inches by 2020. Floods resulting from the rising levels are expected to disrupt water supply systems in the city leading to emergence of waterborne disease including cholera and typhoid among other complications. Floods also form breeding areas for mosquitoes leading to high prevalence of malaria and other conditions whose mosquitoes are the vectors. Boston city is current listed among several U.S coastal areas where more than 4.5 million people living along the coastal line are to be adversely affected by expected rise in sea levels (Green Peace Campaign, n.d). Such populations are likely to be completely displaced leading to public health complications associated with displaced persons

Assignment Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Assignment - Lab Report Example The main attributes of a catalyst are: a. It is not used up during the reaction and can be recovered at the end of the reaction. b. It also lowers the activation energy for the chemical reaction to yield products. 4. Explain gas chromatography? How does it work? Chromatography in general is a laboratory technique for separation of mixtures. Gas chromatography is an analytical technique that involves separation of substances by analyzing the volatility of the components of the mixture. It works by having a stationary phase contained in columns like capillary tube or test tubes coated on their walls. The mobile phase which is the more volatile substances moves past the stationary phase. Sensitive electronic detectors or sensors installed in the device detects and identifies the various gases composed in the mixture as they travel along the column and emerge out of the tube. Detection of substances creates peaks as outputs which can be used for the analysis. The following questions can be answered after the experiment: 5. Did the reaction between acetic acid and ethanol produce ethyl acetate? Explain how you used chromatographic data to analyze the esterification reaction. The reaction between acetic acid and ethanol was able to yield ethyl acetate. This was observed through the fruit flavor smell that was produced during the experiment. Based on the data gathered from gas chromatography, the first set of peaks created without the esterification process, were made as standards to identify the three substances: acetic acid, ethanol and ethyl acetate. Every substance has unique peaks to identify them from each other. When esterification was done, it was observed that there is dominant presence of the ethyl acetate based on the output peaks. The rates were different for every test tube. The results of chromatographic data showed that there are more peaks identified as ethyl acetate. Therefore, esterification process is taking place producing ethyl acetate. 6. Name 3 ways you could modify the experiment to ââ¬Å"pushâ⬠the reaction to favor the products more? For the reaction to produce more of the products which is ethyl acetate, these 3 ways can be done: a. Add more of the reactant such as ethanol. This can push for the reaction to yield more products since there are more reactants for the reaction to happen. b. Addition of catalyst. For esterification, concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as catalyst can facilitate the reaction to happen thus, more products will be produced. c. Higher temperature can speed up the reaction rate for faster production of more products. 7. Why do you need to make a hole in the Parafilm? What would happen if you did not make this hole? Esterification process involves formation of CO2. This gas is released as alcohol and carboxylic acid react with each other to produce H2O and ester. The hole made in the Parafilm will prevent pressure build up inside the test tube. Without the hole, gas particles are trapped in side. Too much pressure built up can cause bursting of the

Gun Ban in America Essay Example for Free
Gun Ban in America Essay In 2012, the most serious topics that people always talking about is Gun ban. Most of people voted for ban guns after the Connecticuts shooting incident. There are lots of children died in the elementary school, and Americans realized the bad effects about selling guns legally in many states. There are at least four shooting incidents each year. People may think it is the time to ban Americas guns now, but in fact it is not the guns fault. For my part, guns should not be banned, and people have the right to have guns ownership. Most people know that guns are one of Americas culture, just like the marijuana. People know what are illegal things, but they will still find a way to obtain them. So, banned guns cant prevent criminals. If the guns banned, criminal can still use other weapons to kill people. For example, in 1976, Washington DC is illegal to own any handguns or to keep any type of guns in home unlocked. However, Washington DC has the most criminal rates in united states. Whenever the guns is illegally, criminals can make any weapons, such as bombs, criminals can make bombs by themselves. Most of time, its the personals problems, criminals who caught by police always have mental ill or they dissatisfying about this country. Therefore, Government need strength the gun education and some safety classes about using guns. Ban guns is not a good solution, because the problem is not about guns. In addition, ban guns means remove the right to someone. In America, people are highly regard human rights. Giving up rights to bear arms would open up a world of control and unnecessary chaos. Some people have guns just for hunting, and they think guns are useful. Some of gun owner using guns in shooting range, they think it is their entertainment. Although, some cities made the announcement of gun ban, people were still reluctant to hand over their guns to Government. If the states that they live have banned guns, they can still go to another states to obtain another one. As part of Americans culture and freedom, it is impossible to ban guns exhaustive because of the different constitutions between states. Finally, the last reason that guns should not be banned, because guns can protect people. Except this criminals, most of people know how to use handguns, and they are using guns to protect their families. What if someone invade their house and pointing a gun at them, they can not wait until the police come. If that happens, no one will be safe. If a person wants to kill people, he will think all the way to hurt people even he did not have guns. However, what if the normal people does not have the guns to protect them when they meet some incidents. Guns always give people a sense of security, even they just locked them at their house. In conclusion, ban guns is not a big deal in America. According to Washington DCs criminal rates, it did not decrease the criminal rates at all. In some cities of America, restricted legislation could not restraint people to crime. Gun ban is only for temporary and it is not a permanent solution to this problem.

Uncle Toms Cabin Essay example -- Uncle Toms Cabin Essays
Uncle Tom's Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this novel during the time of the debates that lead to the Civil War and near the time of the Compromise of 1850. The book provides a defiant protest against the social and political conditions of that era. The division between the northern industrial states and the southern agrarian states was very prominent and apparent. There was fierce competition between them. This lead to differing viewpoints about slavery. The competition helped the South justify it and gave the North reason to denounce it. Information like this is not provided by the author because her target audience at the time she wrote the story was living through these conflicts. To make up for this, I would suggest that before reading this work you have at least a minimal knowledge of the aspects of slavery and its geographical distribution in early America. Also, it is important to have basic understanding of the Christian faith and its two major kinds of believers at the time. There were those who believed that all were equal and that all had souls that were to be treated with compassion, and those who argued that God had created them superior to all blacks. Keep in mind that Mrs. Stowe was living through all of what is in her story. So while providing social, political, and religious commentary, she also spatters her work with racism and subtle bigotry that would not be found in most modern writing. Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel about how trust in God can conque...

Project: First Aid Kit Essay
First aid kit was invented by Johnson in the late 1890ââ¬â¢s. First aid kit got its name is by Johnsonââ¬â¢s first aid kit. The first aid kit formed in the 11th century, to help the pilgrims and knights and also train the other knights and pilgrims to help cure the injured people. So thatââ¬â¢s how and why many of us now use Johnson first aid kit to cure illness and injured people. We all have our first aid kits in cabinetââ¬â¢s rooms or offices and some in cars. But it is helpful and safe to keep a first aid kit with us in our car, homes, jobs, and everywhere we might go that might be dangerous for us or little ones and is good to have one in your purses or childrenââ¬â¢s backpack when they go camping or go to school or walk home or walk to school. The first time that the first aid was ever used was in the middle ages. Then in the 1859 the trained villagers came back to help the illness and injured ones in the battle of the soldering. Then, four years later, more villagers were trained and they formed a new group that we now call the Red Cross to help others during illness or injury but also through losing their homes in a hurricane, like the one in New Jersey with the hurricane Sandy. So there is where we are using the first aid, many developments in the first aid have been used by the wars in worldwarI, worldwarII, and American Civil War. Clara Barton was prompted to organize the American Red Cross during Civil War. Today, there are many groups that use the Johnson first aid kit, so many of us use it in the military and the scouting movement. New techniques and equipment have helped make todayââ¬â¢s Johnson first aid kit simple and effective. What is first aid? Well, first aid is not always to be used to cure injured or illness animals or people; it can also be used to help those who haveà lost their homes in a hurricane or fire. And is most of the time to cure the sick ones and injured ones. What did I learn while I was typing this essay? I have learned a lot! Most of all I learned that the first aid is not always used to cure illness or injury people it is used to help those in need that have lost their homes or need help to keep their homes. I also learned where the first aid name came from it came from the inventor named Johnson, first aid in the late 1890ââ¬â¢s and then formed the American Red Cross. I also accomplished that where and who the inventor was and how the name was formed so there we all know if youââ¬â¢re like me wondering where those answers are of who, when, and where was the first aid came from well there you go because I found all those answer for you.
